How long does a session last?

Sessions are scheduled/billed at 45 minutes long. We spend the bulk of the session working with the issues at hand and then spend the last few minutes closing/integrating the session. The first session, the intake, is 55 minutes long.

What Days do you See Clients?

I see clients regularly on Tuesdays and Wednesdays during the day, and every other Thursday. My first appointment on Tuesdays and Wednesdays is 8am and my last is 4pm. On Thursdays my first opening is 9am and my last is 2pm.

Do you take insurance?

I operate a fee-for-service practice. This means I do not take insurance nor work directly with insurance companies, and sessions are paid for the day of service using credit, debit, or HSA/FSA cards. After sessions, at your request I can give you a receipt called a “super bill” that includes the date of services, price paid, and diagnosis to submit to your insurance company for out-of-network (OON) reimbursement. The best way to determine your plan’s OON reimbursement rate is to call the customer service number on the back of your insurance card. In my experience every plan is different in what they will reimburse and not every plan offers this benefit. Determining this benefit and submitting the super bill to your insurance company is solely your responsibility.

How long do I need to be in counseling?

It depends on the individual. Some clients are only looking for short-term counseling. Others are best served by longer-term work. Some people begin with the intention of a handful of sessions but then realize they may benefit from ongoing support and therapeutic work. We will collaborate to find what is best for you.

Do I need to come every week?

Research shows that counseling is most beneficial when done on a weekly basis. This allows for continued focus on issues that come up in and outside of session so that you can move toward the change you want in your life. When sessions are a couple (or more) weeks apart, the bulk of the session tends to focus more on "catching up" and less on therapeutic work. Sometimes toward the end of the therapeutic relationship, more spaced-out sessions are beneficial as maintenance/check-in work. But during the work of therapy, it's most helpful to come every week. Sometimes life circumstances or finances prohibit sessions every week, and I am of course willing to work with what works best for you.

Do you only work with Moms?

While I specialize and am certified in perinatal mental health, I work with people with a variety of concerns unrelated to motherhood or parenting.

What does Anam mean?

Anam (pronounced AH-nuhm) is the Gaelic word for soul. This word has meaning for me on several levels, one of which is my Irish heritage. But I also believe that the best counseling is soul-centered work and as a therapist I work to help you find deep and meaningful change in your own life.
